EXPLORING THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF BLOCK PLAY

Block play is one of the best toys that kids can play with to stimulate their creativity. Whether you need a house or a castle or a road, you can build them easily with blocks. They are fun, interactive and more importantly, is a great source of learning for your child.

HOW KIDS CAN LEARN THROUGH BLOCK PLAY

There are many ways kids can learn through block play and this can be broken down into multiple stages as your child grows from 12 months to around five years. As a start, children can play with blocks by arranging the block pieces into lines, either vertical stacking or laying down horizontally. By arranging them in lines, kids learn to match the different block pieces which help them to develop the idea of image recognition and connecting blocks. They can also stack up the blocks to form walls and floors. The purpose of this is for your kids to learn the idea of form by building things without any space between them.

Next, your kid can learn how to create enclosures to contain things. For e.g. your child can learn how to build a room, or the shore of a lake. This helps your kid to understand the concept of enclosure without any gaps, which will be beneficial for your child’s language and writing skills. For e.g. they need to learn the to enclose the letter 'o', if not it may become a 'u' or 'c'. Lastly, your kid can combine all the above mentioned stages to build a simple 3-D item. The idea is to create something that has a structure and is supported by arches.

TIP: PLAY WITH FEWER BLOCKS

Fewer blocks force your child to be more creative. By working with limited resources, it forces your child to become more creative and think of out-of-the-box ideas. Often, this produces a better outcome than what we might have achieved if we were to have unlimited materials.

For a baby or young toddler, all they need is a simple set of cubes. At that age, children are simply learning how to grip, drop and pile the blocks. Preschoolers, on the other hand, will have very different needs. They should have a longer and more comprehensive block set as they are learning the idea of building. Different shapes and sizes will be needed for them to build doorways, windows and other complicated structures.
